THE CHURCH OF SAINT ELIGIUS

The roman part of the church dates back from the 12th century. The octagonal tower built out of fieldstones has been conserved as part of the elevation of the nave. In 1893 a new neo-Gothic church was added on the south side. A succesful restoration was carried out in 1994. You can find several objects of interest in this church.

THE OOSTHOF

There are a lot of historical farms throughout the village territory. Here, we mention only the most important and still existing ones. This farmstead stood pride of place in Snellegem and was recorded as far back as 942 in count Arnulf the Great’s deed of gift. Here Jacob van Maerlant served the lords of Rode. Thanks to the 16th century entrance gate and some parts of the interior dating back from the same period, this building is of great historical interest and is now a ‘listed building’. The Oosthof is at present a gastronomic restaurant and tearoom.Continue >>

After the war a large area of woodland was taken over by the munition depot. The 'Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos' (the flemish nature and forest agency) bought almost 198 acres in the northern part of the militairy domain in 2008. Tehy also manage the southern part. The domain forest that borders to the north of the military domain is open to ramblers and some paths and lanes may also be used by cyclists and horsemen.
